Each of Lutheran Church–Canada’s three Regions has a Regional Mission and Ministry Council (RMMC).
An RMMC has two primary tasks:
- To be a conduit for communication from Synod leadership to congregations and for input from congregations to Synod leadership.
- To have grassroots input and direction for local mission and ministry opportunities.
To facilitate this interaction, a pastor and lay member from each circuit of a region is elected to the RMMC. The RMMC aims to meet at least twice a year in order to discuss local opportunities and needs, and her members are to be familiar with local missions and supported congregations. This is the primary place where local funding decisions are made and opportunities are discussed in our work together as Lutheran Church–Canada.

What’s unique about LCC’s West Region?
Our West Region congregations are located in diverse economic, cultural, and religious communities. Members come from different socio-economic, cultural, historic, and religious backgrounds. Churches are located in cosmopolitan, metropolitan, suburban, rural, remote, and isolated locations. Many are geographically isolated by vast rugged terrain. Congregants travel long distances to participate in the life of the congregation. This is true in both the rural and urban/suburban contexts. The West Region is also a place of continuous transition. Though set within the territories of our country’s First Nations, the development of the West Region has largely been through immigration. Lutheran congregations were established by waves of European immigrants. This is especially true of the post-war years when dispossessed peoples sought refuge and a national identity in Canada. Immigrations patterns change. One wave of immigration replaces another and migrants move to other areas resulting in continuous transition. – Rev. Robert Mohns, LCC West Regional Pastor
What’s unique about LCC’s Central Region?
The Central Region is primarily Canadian prairie, with a bit of the Canadian Shield thrown in from Northwest Ontario. This means our rural parishes and towns, even our cities, are primarily agriculture-focused (with a small amount of mining, especially in Northwest Ontario). Like the West Region, the geographical distances are large. Immigration here was most pronounced in waves around the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. This makes us “newer” than East Region. Our agricultural background causes our culture and congregations to be communally oriented rather than hierarchical—perhaps more so than in any other part of Canada. What’s unique about LCC’s East Region?
The East Region is often not as spread out as other parts of Synod. While there are not great distances that separate most of us–with the exception of the 3,000 km wide Ottawa Circuit, including our isolated congregations in Northern Ontario, francophone Quebec, and Atlantic Canada–there are many differences in the communities of our congregations. We have congregations in densely populated urban settings, in small towns and in rural areas across our six eastern provinces. Each of these have their own strengths, opportunities, and challenges. We have a history of working together in support of the unique needs of congregations in each of these areas. There is a strong emphasis on Word and Sacrament as the means which our Lord has promised to create, strengthen, and nourish saving faith. We seek to support congregations and Pastors as they use these means in service. The Lord has also developed a spirit of seeking out opportunities for outreach and new ministries among us. The Lord has blessed this Region with very skilled and dedicated Pastors and lay leaders over the years. Many of these are still in positions of service and leadership.
